  • HOW IT ALL STARTED

Following the catastrophic events of 9/11, it became evident that the communication infrastructure for first responders was inadequate in several areas. The signal was being disrupted by structures such as concrete, basements, stairwells, and dead spots on the far ends of buildings, which posed a significant challenge for first responders and often resulted in communication failure.

As a response to this issue, many localities, in compliance with IFC 510, began mandating Bi-Directional Amplifier and Distributed Antenna Systems in new buildings. In 2018, the state of Ohio also implemented one such mandate.

  • HOW DOES IT WORK?

Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement System (ERCES) functions by enhancing signals through a donor antenna. The antenna is installed at the top of the building, which then relays the signal back to the radio repeater located in the nearby area.

The Bi-Directional Amplifier, also known as a signal booster, acts as an uplink and downlink effectively amplifying communication for first responder radios throughout the entire building.

Finally, the Distributed Antenna System, consisting of passive or active antennas, cabling, and other components, serves to distribute the signal throughout a building.

Radio signals are attenuated by:

  • Concrete, Metal and other building materials

  • Low-E Glass

  • Below-Ground Structures

  • Other obstructions

  • RF Interference

Overcoming radio signal attenuation:

  • Donor antenna installed on the roof of the structure sends signals back to the radio repeater.

  • BDA provides the uplink and downlink for the DAS.

  • DAS installed throughout the building to provide even coverage for radio signals.

Collaboration Between BDA/DAS Systems Improves Communication for Emergency Response Teams!
